IHOP and the Mystery of the Missing Wallet (A True Story)

Had a really interesting day today. On my way down from UP Town Center's steel parking, I noticed that I was missing my wallet. I doubled back and checked every step (it was just within 2-3 minutes from when I stepped out of the car), but could not find it. I asked the bystanders, and they didn't notice anything. Panicking, I asked for the help of the mall security team. I asked them to check the CCTV footage and hopefully get an idea what happened to my wallet (it had 10 credit cards, all my atms with passwords, all my IDs, and cash worth 300 thousand pesos - I wish!)

The team was very helpful, and guided me through the process of filing a report. Somebody even went back with me to the scene of the crime, just to check if the CCTV would have footage. My guess - I pulled out my phone to play Pokemon Go, and I dropped my wallet in the process (I was wearing shorts with no back pockets). So to cut the story short, I found my wallet at the back of the car. Thanks, Manong. And you may call me "stupid" if you want. I deserve it (sinabi ko talaga sa kanya yun).

With my millones back in hand, I proceeded with the plan for the day: find a nice spot, grab some snacks, get some work done, and catch me some Pokemon. Ihop looked like the right spot, so I waltzed in, confident that I will be able to pay my bill (flashback to my scene with manong guard: "Manong, ni pang parking wala ako. Baka sa yo pa ako mangutang nyan.")

I was delighted to see that I was seated right in the middle of a lure party. Hurray! Time to catch some rare ones, and time to level up some more! I'm gonna be in the province for a few days this week, so there's a high likelihood that I'll be left behind by my companeros y companeras as far as leveling up goes. So I needed a bit of a head start. Wifi connection? Check. Ihop had a decent wifi connection and I was able to connect all my devices with ease. Comfort? Check. I had a nice table though the room was a bit warm (more about this later).

I was still full from lunch so I decided to order dessert. I initially thought about pancakes or waffles, but remembered that I didn't exactly like the way they cook pancakes here. It's too grainy for my liking, and I could never finish a plate no matter how hungry I was. Some people like it, so I guess it's a matter of preference.

So instead, I ordered the Strawberry Banana Danish Fruit Crepe (P285) and bottomless iced tea. After all, I was planning on staying a while. The crepe was okay, I guess, but I was disappointed when I didn't see any ice cream. My fault, I guess, for not asking in the first place (or it was likely described well in the menu anyway). At least I was eating real bananas and strawberries, though the syrup was a bit too "cough syrupy" for me. I did finish everything, so that's a good sign.

About 2 hours after I came in, I noticed that the wifi died on me. I was still connected, but for some reason I could not access websites. It could be anything, really, but at that point I chose to believe that they picked on me and blocked my access using some high tech process that I couldn't even begin fathoming. Sorry, Ihop staff, but I have my data connection with me (WTF, Smart, only 3G? Seriously?). With nothing much left to do but kill time and catch Pokemon, I stayed for 20 more minutes. I refused to immediately give them the satisfaction of having beaten me. Once I was sure they have raised the white flag of surrender, I asked for the check and left the place. But not before taking this crappy photo of a large electric fan pretending to be an air-conditioning unit. Yeah, it was a bit warm when I got in in the afternoon. Seriously though, the staff was nice and attentive and I really hope they didn't purposely kill the wifi on me. Just as I was about to order dinner, mind you.

So that, my friends is part of the adventure that was today. I forgot to mention, but in the middle of all the bruhaha, an old(er) lady approached me and asked if she could use my phone (this after hearing that I lost my wallet, and after the guard telling her that there are NO landlines in the area). She offered to pay but I just dialled her number, gave her my phone, and let her take care of her urgent business. No need for the payment, I said. Maliit na bagay. I'd say that little random act of kindness jolted the universe and moved my wallet to where I eventually found it.
