Wasn't my first time dining at My Thai in Eastwood, but I don't remember being this disappointed. It probably has something to do with the food choices - I remember liking the grilled pork a lot. But there I was, faced with dishes that promised to be delicious, unable to fathom where things could have gone wrong.
To be fair, the Tom Yam Goong was good (enough) - it had 3 or 4 prawns in it, and the sourness was well balanced by the spiciness of the soup. Aside from the leaves and the button mushroom, I don't recall it having other seafoods in it though - not that I mind. I'd survive on prawns if those were the last edible things on the planet. I'm not a "soup fan" but I couldn't resist a good serving of this Thai specialty. But then again, at P225 per bowl (good for 1 or 2) it had better be good.
Now for the interesting stuff. I'm not sure what possessed me, but I decided to order the Squid Stir Fry with Garlic and Peppercorns (P280). The name doesn't sound so bad, right? In fact, the long explanation made me think that this dish will probably rival the squid dishes from my favorite Chinese restaurants. How was I to know that I was setting myself up for a major disappointment? The only saving grace for this dish was the sauce - it would literally have no taste without it. I'm not sure if it's supposed to be that way, but poorly seasoned food does not appeal to me at all (the tastier, the better!)
After my first bite, I decided to order the Fried Spring Rolls with Chicken and Noodle (Php155). It's always a safe bet, IMO, and I needed something to digest the extra rice with. At least this was way better than the squid. But to be honest, there was nothing special about it. It tasted like every other spring roll in every other average restaurant. Again, thank God for the sauce.
The experience would have been much better if I got the drink that I wanted - Grape Shake (P135). But as luck would have it, the drink was out of stock. I grudgingly grumbled "I'll just have water then" in my dismay.
Now I haven't totally given up on My Thai - as mentioned, I've been here a couple of times before and I don't remember having that bad of an experience. I even overheard the old couple seated on the next table saying "yeah the food was great - that's why we keep coming back here" when the manager asked how the food was. Curious why he didn't ask my table how our order was - did he somehow expect a non-favorable response? I was seriously considering the possibility of the soup ruining everything for me - did the sourness somehow kill my taste buds? I highly doubt it though.
